Recently, a Turkish customer asked us about a device that can measure the light transmittance of textile materials. We recommended him the LS117 light transmittance meter. This is a professional light transmittance and optical density measuring instrument that uses the principle of diffuse transmission. Compared to most light transmittance meters, this instrument is different in that it can measure the light transmittance and optical density of various materials such as translucent, fog and matte.
After sending the product information of the LS117 light transmittance meter to this customer, the customer still questioned the product. We also understand this very much, so we found similar samples for testing.
The customer's sample belongs to a polyethylene (PE) textile bag, which is mainly used to cover the cargo on the truck and is waterproof. The woven bag we found is a consumable for packaging. Chinese woven bags are usually made of polypropylene (PP), which is almost the same as PE.
First, we measured the light transmittance and optical density of the single-layer white woven bag using the LS117 light transmittance meter. As shown in the video, the light transmittance of the single-layer woven bag was 46% and the optical density value was 0.419.
Next, we folded the woven bag in half and measured the light transmittance and optical density of the double-layer woven bag. As shown in the video below, the light transmittance of the double-layer woven bag was 24% and the optical density value was 0.762.
From the two measurement videos, we found that the smaller the transmittance, the greater the optical density value. This is because the optical density value is the logarithm of the reciprocal of the transmittance. The two values have a certain conversion relationship. In some industries, the optical density of materials is also a production process that needs to be strictly controlled.
